Notes from the Winemaker:
2016 Bricco delle Viole is one of the most complex wines we have released lately. Profound floral perfumes and minerality come out vividly, red and dark berries, sour cherry, lavender and graphite dominate the nose together with gentle scents of violet petal, rose bud and a hint of pine. 2016 Vintage reaches a beautiful balance of structure, aromatics and richness with a fresh finish.

Among the historical vineyards of Barolo, Bricco delle Viole is the highest and the closest to the Alps. It rises from 400 to 480 meters above sea level, on the Western ridge of the village. Its name, “Hill of Violets”, originates from the flowers that blossom early here due to the perfect south exposure. Up above the fogs, Bricco delle Viole enjoys the earliest sunrise and the last sunset every day. Thanks to its vines dating back to 1949, a dramatic diuturnal temperature range and this pure light, Bricco delle Viole generates a sophisticated and profound Barolo DOCG of bright aromatics, chiseled tannins and subtle minerality. 2016 is a vintage that perfectly suits this high elevation vineyard: the longer season exalted the floral lift and the minerality that is so typical of this cru.

AGING:
Bricco delle Viole is aged in large Slavonian casks, mostly 25 and 50 hectoliters. Aging varies between 30 and 42 months and was of almost 32 months in 2016. Raking is an individual choice, cask by cask. 2016 was bottled on July 30th 2019.

Ratings & Reviews
98 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"From the Bricco delle Viole cru, or the vineyard most strongly associated with this historic estate, this is a versatile or "evergreen" wine that always delivers consistent results. The G.D. Vajra 2016 Barolo Bricco delle Viole sees fruit from a seven-hectare vineyard with high exposures positioned at 400 to 480 meters above sea level. This site shows characteristic Tortonian-era soils classified as Sant'Agata marl with fossils. These soils have an enormous capacity to regulate the ripening process, resulting in the longer growing seasons relished by the Nebbiolo grape. In a word, the profile here is classic. You get delicate fruit tones and wild rose with camphor ash, licorice and tar. The wine is beautifully harmonious and ethereal. Some 15,000 bottles are hitting the market now." - Monica Larner (23rd Jul 2020)

97 Points - Vinous:
"The 2016 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is going to need a few years to emerge, but it has all the qualities to develop into a truly special wine. Dark red/purplish fruit, hard candy, mint, lavender and sweet spice give the 2016 striking inner perfume. On the palate, the 2016 is a tightly wound, classically austere Barolo that will especially delight readers with traditionally leaning palates. In this late-ripening vintage, there is a great balance of structure, aromatics and mid-palate sweetness. I absolutely loved it." - Antonio Galloni (Feb 2020)

97 Points - James Suckling:
"The nose is packed with blue flowers, such as violets, iodine and blueberries. Very charming, seductive aromas here. The palate has such plush, long and expansive style. Elegant and smooth, it delivers an expansive bloom of fragrance and flavor at the finish. Effortless and layered. This is a star of the vintage. Drink now and for two decades." - (28 May, 2020)

95 Points - Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"Classic Nebbiolo aromas of rose, dark-skinned berry, star anise and tilled earth are front and center on this radiant red. On the elegant palate, fresh acidity and taut refined tannins support juicy sour cherry, cranberry, clove and star anise. It's still youthfully austere and needs time to fully develop. Drink 2026–2036." - Kerin O’Keefe (9/1/2020)
