Notes from the Winemaker:
The 2017 Yarden Chardonnay features attractive notes of fresh lemon, ripe pear and fresh flowers, rounded out with hints of apricot, cream and French oak. Displaying full body with pleasing acidity, the wine is both flavorful and drinkable.

Ready to enjoy upon release, the wine will continue to develop in the bottle for a few years, and should stay in excellent drinking condition for some five to seven years from vintage. Try serving the wine with seared salmon with crispy skin, a whole smoker roasted chicken or pumpkin ravioli.

The Vintage:
While the winter leading up to the 2017 season started promisingly, with an unusually cold and wet December, total seasonal precipitation finished at only 82% of normal. The lack of late winter rain resulted in restrained vine growth and canopies nicely open to light and air penetration. After an average spring, July saw daily highs 2oC (3.6oF) warmer than usual. Happily, typical weather returned in August, and the absence of weather extremes led to beautiful, and faster than normal, ripening. Ending up as a relatively short eleven-week harvest, 2017 was yet another vintage of excellent quality.

Yarden Chardonnay is produced solely from fruit grown in the northern Golan Heights, Israel’s coldest winegrowing region, in vineyards at elevations up to 1,200 meters (3,900 feet). The northern Golan has become well known for yielding Chardonnay grapes of excellent quality. The wine aged for seven months in French oak barrels, of which some 40% were new.

The Appellation:
The Galilee (or Galil) is the most northern, and generally considered the best, appellation in Israel. The highest quality area within the appellation is the Golan Heights (or simply the Golan), the coldest region in Israel. The vineyards on this volcanic plateau rise from 400 meters (1,300 feet) above sea level to 1,200 meters (3,900 feet) and receive snowfall in the winter. Golan Heights Winery is located in the town of Katzrin in the central Golan.

Ratings & Reviews

89 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2016 Vintage):
"The 2016 Chardonnay Odem Organic (Yarden) was aged for seven months in 70% new French oak. It comes in at 14% alcohol. This is always pretty well priced and very correct. A restrained wine, it has elegance in the mid-palate and handles the wood very well. It's not terribly expressive, but it has freshness and focus. I especially appreciated the freshness. Nothing makes it stand out, but it is beautifully balanced. The price is reasonable and it checks all the boxes. I'd drink this on the younger side, but it should hold nicely for a few years, at the least. The fresh feel may help preserve it better than anticipated, in fact, but let's be conservative in that regard. In the meanwhile, this precise Chardonnay is a nice value. There were 2,300 cases produced from Golan Heights' vines at around 4,000 feet in altitude." - Mark Squires (31st Oct 2018)

89 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine (2016 Vintage):
"A broad, medium-bodied white, boasting glazed pear, citronella and honey cream flavors, edged with mineral elements. Almond paste, floral and baking spice details mark the finish. Kosher. Drink now through 2020. 10,930 cases made." – GS (Oct 31, 2018)

Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"This wine's green apple and vanilla bean aromas prepare the palate for nectarine, caramelized pineapple, focaccia and hazelnut flavors. It has good mouthfeel, with strong, upfront tannins that recede into a butterscotch-inflected finish." - Mike DeSimone (9/1/2018)
