Notes from the Winemaker:

Louis Kapcsandy Sr. has led a remarkable life. Arriving in the U.S. as an Hungarian refuge in the 1960s, he is a self-made American success story, as well as a retired Professional NFL player. His chemical engineering background was the foundation upon which he built a very successful construction company, but also continues to play a significant role in his vast knowledge of soil analysis, vine health and vinification. In 2001, his lifelong passion for wine turned into reality with the purchase and replanting of the famed Berringer State Lane Vineyard in Yountville. Along with his wife and son, and consulting winemaker Denis Malbec (Chateau Latour) they are making modern Cabernets with an old world finesse, and leading the charge towards producing legendary wines with lower alcohols and a nod to the wines of decades past.

Ratings & Reviews

90 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"A new offering made from lots culled out from their barrels, the seductive, charming 2007 Endre (40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) is a sleeper of the vintage with a magnetic hedonism. White chocolate, dark berries, and lots of flesh are reminiscent of a ripe Pomerol vintage. It is best drunk during its first decade of life. This offering was originally called Overture #1, but because Opus One has a second wine called Overture, the name was changed to Endre. Some readers may have bought this wine at the winery with a Overture #1 label. Be assured, it is the same wine as the Endre.

This is a superb line-up of wines from Lou Kapcsandy, who emigrated from Hungary to set up a construction business in Seattle, which he gave up for his true love - making wines along with his wife, Bobbi, and son, Louis. They were fortunate to be able to purchase Beringer’s State Lane Vineyard in Yountville, and have it completely replanted by Helen Turley and John Wetlaufer. They then brought in Bordelais Denis Malbec to help produce the wines, which have gone from strength to strength. The 2006s are magnificent, but may be eclipsed by the 2007s." - Robert Parker (12/2009)

90 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine:
"A rich, graceful style, offering loamy earth, blackberry and wild berry fruit, with graphite, mineral and cedar notes. Full-bodied and balanced, ending with a complex display of dried berry and earth. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2017. 500 cases made." –JL (10/31/2010)

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar:
"(48% merlot, 40% cabernet sauvignon, 8% cabernet franc and 4% petit verdot) Deep red-ruby. Very ripe aromas of plum liqueur, cherry and licorice pastille. Supple and fine-grained but at the same time spicy and juicy. A fleshy, nicely dense wine with good lingering sweetness" - Stephen Tanzer (May/June 2010)

95 Points & "Cellar Selection" - Wine Enthusiast Magazine (2008 vintage):

"Here’s one for the cellar. It’s a big, dry, muscular wine, assertive in tannins, with mineral-driven blackberry and black currant flavors. Muscular and intense, it should provide great drinking starting in 2015 and for many years after. A very great expression of its vineyard, which is basically the old Beringer State Lane Vineyard." — S.H. (7/1/2011)
