About this wine:
2011 Vineyard Info/Growing Year/Vinification
Winter was gone as soon as it started. There were almost 14” of rain in March and temperatures in April broke 80°. Bud break occurred in white grapes in March - with a bit of shatter, whereas Cabernet came out in April and fared fine with scant rain. Mild summer temperatures ensued with barely a day of the entire season over 100°. The gentle summer stretched out and we were rewarded with weeks of fantastic weather, providing much needed ripening time. This is typical Coombsville weather and Kobalt thrives in it. While wineries in the North end of Napa Valley were quite worried, we in Coombsville thought it was a pretty good year. Harvest started the third week of October and ran into the second week of November with good quality, tight clusters and no bunch rot. Yields were similar to 2010. Quality was very good with lower alcohols, balanced acids, good structure and a long palate.

2011 Kobalt Cabernet Sauvignon (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) 684 cases produced

In the glass, the 2011 Cabernet is intense deep purple & concentrated blue. It has a nose overflowing with ripe raspberry, plum & blueberry – etched with nuances of spicy vanilla oak, the cedar of cigar boxes and creamy currant. The young wine asserts a foundation of crisp tannins and bright fruit promising rewards to those who wait a decade. To drink now, please “splash” decant and check the wine every 30 minutes or so until the youthful tannins soften up. Then enjoy flavors of ripened stone fruits gushing from the glass and pleasing the palate - invigorating with focused bright cherry, raspberry and layers of spicy vanilla framed with ripe plum. The lingering, lively cherry-skin finish satisfies those who drink this wine young while sealing a promise of its ageability.

Ratings & Reviews

90+ Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar:
"(from two Coombsville sources): Saturated ruby. Aromas of purple and black fruits lifted by a violet topnote. Intensely flavored but youthfully imploded and not at all opulent today. Conveys a small-berry character and good power and minerality but this clenched cabernet will need time in the cellar to expand." - Stephen Tanzer (May/June 2014)

92 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2009 vintage):
"The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon flows across the palate with waves of dark red fruit, spices and licorice. The 2009 doesn’t have the delineation or elegance of the 2008, but it is exceptional just the same. The aromas and flavors build beautifully to the big, seamless finish. Readers who enjoy full-bodied, hedonistic Cabernets will be thrilled with this effort. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2021." - Antonio Galloni (Feb 2012)

92 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (2009 vintage):
"Saturated dark ruby. Cassis, blackberry, licorice and violet on the nose. Quite dark in character but smooth and pliant, conveying a low-yield concentration. Very sweet, youthful wine with a long finish that coats the teeth with dusty tannins. The cabernet here was picked into November in 2009." - Stephen Tanzer (May '12)
