Notes From The Winemaker:

Our fifth generation Barossan winemakers have revived the old vineyards but continue to dry grow, hand prune and hand pick; producing fruit with vibrant colour and flavour. Fruit sourced from our own “Jackaman’s” 60 year old Lyndoch vineyard, dry grown low yielding and extremely intense, as well as fruit from a brilliant 80 year old patch of bush vines belonging to one of our growers, is blended to produce this amazing, bold and complex wine.

Langmeil is home to The Freedom Shiraz, believed to be planted in 1843 by vigneron Christian Auricht. Escaping war and persecution in Prussia, Auricht travelled to his new homeland, finding Freedom in the Barossa Valley. His original plantings survive to this day and are some of the oldest and rarest vines in the world.
In May 2014, The Freedom 1843 Shiraz joined the prestigious Langton's Classifciation VI honour roll in the category of 'Excellent'.

Colour: Deep crimson with purple hues.

Aroma: An intense aroma of ripe Satsuma plum, mocha and cookie dough, mingle with hints of cedar, violets and sweet spice.

Palate: Rich, sweet fruit is balanced wonderfully with briary and sweet spice and lovely, silky tannins. A full bodied, textured wine showing great complexity with hints of cedar and biscuit and in combination, flows through to the lengthy, fruitful and spicy finish.

Cellaring: 2013 - 2028

Ratings & Reviews:

95+ Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2012 vintage):
"Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2012 Shiraz 1843 Freedom is profoundly scented of crushed blackberries, black cherries and mulberries with suggestions of cedar, spice box, black pepper and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, the oak is standing out at this youthful stage though the intensity of fruit and firm backbone of grainy tannins and lively acid suggest this should marry with time and emerge a harmonious wine possessing glorious complexity. Forget this one in the cellar for 5-7 years." - Lisa Perrotti-Brown (Jun 2015)
94 Points - Antonio Galloni's Vinous (2010 vintage):
"(made from vineyard that the winery says was established in 1843, with many of the original plantings still producing fruit): Inky purple. Heady aromas of black raspberry, blueberry, cola, licorice and vanilla, with a spicy topnote. Stains the palate with sappy dark fruit and floral pastille flavors and shows serious thrust and incisiveness on the back half. Supple tannins come on late and add firmness to the black and blue fruit qualities that cling to the finish." - Josh Raynolds (July 2013)
94 Points - Wine Enthusiast Magazine (2008 vintage):
"Named for the year the vineyard was planted, this is a full-bore Barossa fruit bomb—in a positive way. Waves of lush berry fruit are framed by hints of vanilla and mint in this full-bodied, creamy-textured wine that somehow manages to retain a sense of elegance and proportion."
