Notes from the Winemaker:
Baudana is a hidden gem among the historical vineyards of Serralunga. Once celebrated, then forgotten, today it is regaining the prestige of its past.

A deep red in the glass introduces aromas of pure cherries and plums accented with spice, graphite, eucalyptus and licorice. Warm and dry character with firm tannins balanced by a fresh and gentle acidity. A unique soil composition with blue clay translates in a wine with a powerful elegance.

Varieties and Vines:
Baudana vineyards encompass 50 years old vines of Nebbiolo located 350 meters above the sea.

Harvest and winemaking:
Baudana enjoys amazing soil conditions, thanks to a higher water retention. Harvest usually takes place on the third week of October. Fermentation starts quite fast and runs smoothly for approximately 30 days, followed by another 10 days of maceration. One Slavonian cask is used to ferment most of the grapes, with some stainless-steel vessels used as a backup. Punch-downs and gentle pump-overs are the only operations over the time of maceration. The wine is wracked into oak after malolactic fermentation and spends an average of 32+ months in large Slavonian oak casks.

Ratings & Reviews
95 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
The Luigi Baudana 2016 Barolo Baudana opens to a saturated and dark garnet color. Of these three Baroli from Luigi Baudana, this is perhaps the most complete and round. It shows the mineral signature that we got in the Cerretta (also from Serralunga d'Alba) with a bigger fruit profile, complete with sweet cherry and blackberry preserves. In fact, this wine feels a bit riper, sunnier and sweeter than the others in this grouping. Last year, in the 2015 vintage, this was my favorite wine. But in this tighter and more linear 2016 vintage, I prefer the Cerretta by a very small margin. Both wines are excellent. Only 3,500 bottles were released." - Monica Larner (23rd Jul 2020)

95 Points - Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"Balsamic aromas of camphor mingle with pressed rose, new leather and small red berry. Firmly structured and youthfully austere, the linear palate features dried cherry, licorice, cinnamon and tobacco alongside assertive but noble tannins and fresh acidity. Drink 2026–2036." - Kerin O’Keefe (9/1/2020)

95 Points - Vinous:
"The 2016 Barolo Baudana is laced with sweet red cherry, floral overtones and silky tannins, all of which make it one of the more refined, sensual Serralunga Barolos readers will come across. In this tasting, the Baudana impresses with its haunting aromatics and transparent expression of Nebbiolo. Like all of these wines, it needs time in bottle but it is super impressive, even in the early going. " Antonio Galloni - (Feb 2020)
