Notes from the Winemaker:

Santa Lucia Highlands — the ideal, new world site for top-flight Pinot Noir. Paraiso boasts the district's original plantings of Pinot Noir. Here, the mountainside soils, cool breezes from nearby Monterey Bay, and patient, sustainable farming practices combine to grow Pinot Noir of outstanding character and elegance.

The Smith family’s four decades experience in careful, conscientious winegrowing has led to official “sustainable vineyard” certification and status for Paraiso - insuring the highest quality fruit for the winemaking process. In the cellar, traditional small lot fermentations, gentle handling, and classic french oak aging create the look-to standard for new world pinot. The vineyard’s “terroir” is clearly expressed in the finished wine: rich cherry/plum flavors, velvety mouthfeel, and balancing, bright acidity...

What Does It Taste Like?

This is the third Pinot Noir made in our new, state-of-the-art winery. The ability to ferment and age in very small lots shows through in the finished wine’s layers of complexity. Equal parts power and finesse, it displays classic Santa Lucia Highlands character: rich cherry/plum fruit accented by nuances of nutmeg, pepper, smoke, and vanilla. The wine's perfectly poised fruit/acid balance makes it incredibly food-versatile; it is a wonderful complement to roast fowl and grilled salmon, as well as almost any beef or lamb preparation.

Ratings / Reviews for 2007 Vintage:

Wine Spectator - 92 Points
"Serves up a trim, flavorful band of ripe cherry, wild berry and strawberry jam that's elegantly styled and well-structured, finishing with a long, complex finish echoing anise and mineral. Drink now through 2014." (06/09)

I bought a bottle of this on Christine's recommendation and loved it. If you like Santa Lucia Highlands grapes, you'll definitely enjoy this wine. Great price/performance at $16.99.
