Notes from the Winemaker (2007 vintage):

It can be said that the Syrah varietal is Santa Barbara County's great noble red. Formidable and ageworthy, it excels beyond all measure in our county. This bottling is abundant with suggestions of cherry, blackberry and hints of pepper. Its silky texture carries ripe fruit and tannins on the palate.

Grapes for our Syrah come from our own estate vineyard here in Ballard Canyon. After the grapes were removed from their stems, they were cold-soaked and then fermented in small, open-top bins. We carefully punched down the fermenting must by hand twice a day. The Syrah was then aged in a mixture of new (41%) and neutral French oak barrels for 16 months. During blending, we included 7% Petite Sirah and 10% Grenache to add to the complexity of the wine. The wine was bottled unfiltered in February, 2009 and released at the end of that year. 838 cases were produced.

Ratings & Reviews

Rank #27 on Top 100 Wines of 2011, 93 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine:
"Complex and layered, offering a firm core of dried berry, mineral, cedar and sage, with dashes of pepper and spice. Full-bodied, sleek and focused, ending with a touch of creamy oak. Drink now through 2010. 1,148 cases made." –JL (2010)

92 Points & "Editor's Choice" - Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"A huge wine, explosive in ripe fruit, elaborated with rich oak and wrapped into smooth, sweet tannins. Made from vineyards throughout the county, it dazzles with a complex of blackberry jam, mocha, date, bacon and smoky sandalwood flavors. Really impressive, especially at this price. Drink Now–2015."  — S.H.  (6/1/2011)

90 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The outstanding 2008 Syrah Santa Barbara exhibits mineral-laced, dark raspberry, kirsch, and blacker fruit characteristics, a velvety texture, medium to full body, and an elegant, soft, seductive personality. Drink it over the next 4-5 years." -Robert Parker (8/2010)

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar:
"Inky purple. Ripe dark berries, cherry and woodsmoke on the nose, with complicating notes of musky herbs and licorice. Chewy blackcurrant and bitter cherry flavors show a ripe quality and some sweet, nutty oak. The dusty framing tannins add grip to a broad, chewy and slightly warm finish. Nicely full if a bit inelegant." - Josh Raynolds (Nov/Dec '10)
