About this wine:

One Point Five is an elegant, silky Cabernet Sauvignon with soft tannins and abundant fruit that is approachable when young, yet capable of aging gracefully. This wine reflects the climate and soils of our Stags Leap District vineyard sites and Shafer’s commitment to meticulous, sustainable farming and quality winemaking.

Winemaker's Comments

“This is a Cabernet that is so enjoyable now and will just get better with time in the cellar. Aromas of rich, polished black fruit, mocha, and spice, followed by fulsome, juicy flavors of blackberry and black cherry, chocolate, plum and cedar, with ripe, smooth tannins and a pleasingly long finish.”
— Elias Fernandez

“[Shafer is known for] Cabernet that defines the Stags Leap District.”

Ratings & Reviews

93 Points - James Suckling:
"This is so balanced and delicious now. Love the leather, forest floor and fresh mushroom character with dark fruits. Full and silky with ripe berries and spices and just a hint of wood. Velvety texture. Give it another three or four years of bottle age." - (June 15th, 2011)

92 Points -
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five should turn out to be just as good. Slightly more powerful with sweeter fruit as well as more glycerin and fat, this is a big, full-bodied Stags Leap Cabernet offering abundant notes of roasted herbs, chocolate, cassis, incense and earth. Drink this deep, powerful 2008 over the next 10-15 years.

While still renowned for their portfolio of classic world-class reds, Shafer also turns out a terrific non-malolactic Chardonnay from the Red Shoulder Ranch. The only dramatic change made over recent years is that instead of 100% being barrel-fermented and oak-aged, 25% is now aged in stainless steel which has added freshness and possibly longevity. Introduced several years ago, the Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five cuvee is aged 22 months in 100% new French oak. It is meant to be a reference point Cabernet from Stags Leap priced lower than Shafer’s limited production, usually monumental Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon. Shafer’s flagship offering is their monumental Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select (about 2,000 cases produced). Always 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged for at least 30 months in oak, this is one of Napa’s most profound wines. Since 1999, Shafer has made a Syrah/Petite Sirah blend (usually 80% of the former and 20% of the latter) aged 32 months in 100% new French oak. The first vintage, the 1999 Relentless, which they opened at the winery to show how well it is aging, is still a baby at age 11. I rated it 96 points, which is higher than the 93 points I gave it in 2002. So much for California Syrah not aging well! The 1999 is still intense with a plum color and lots of grilled " - Robert Parker (Dec 2010)

92 Points & "Cellar Selection" - Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"Full-bodied and rich, as all Shafer reds are, this wine’s blackberry, blueberry, currant and cassis flavors were aged in 100% new French oak, but the smoky wood overlay is seamless. The tannins are big, and the wine has a drink-me-now sweetness, but it really needs time. Give it a good 5–7 years."  — S.H.  (7/1/2011)

92 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar:
"(15.1% alcohol; includes 2% petit verdot):  Bright, deep red.  Aromatic, rather claret-like nose combines currant, tobacco, black licorice and minerals; more red fruit than black.  Much less forthcoming on the palate than the merlot, showing strong soil tones and minerality to the cherry and cedar flavors.  Finishes with broad, dusty, palate-saturating tannins.  A serious, ageworthy wine with attractive floral lift." - Stephen Tanzer (May/June '11)

90 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine:
"Rough-hewn, chunky and extracted, with dried herb, leather, dried berry and sage. Not the typical Shafer polish, but consistent with the One Point Five style. Decant. Drink now through 2018." —J.L. (March 23, 2011)

91 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2009 vintage):
"The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five comes across as silky and seductive. Ripe red berries, flowers, mint and spices caress the palate in this understated, gracious wine. The 2009 impresses for its seamless texture and long, polished finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019." - Antonio Galloni (Dec 2011)

93 Points -
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2007 vintage):
"The dense ruby/purple-tinged 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five (includes 1% Petit Verdot, 10,000 cases produced) offers up juicy red and black fruit notes intermixed with licorice, coffee beans, and camphor as well as an impressive, full-bodied texture, good elegance, and floral undertones. With a savory, broad texture, this beauty can be drunk now or cellared for 15-20 years." -Robert Parker (12/2009)
