Notes from the Winemaker:
Nozzole estate consists of 1,000 acres of vineyards at 300 meters in elevation in the Chianti Classico zone. In order to obtain concentration and complexity in the wine, yields are kept low. The grapes were hand harvested, destemmed and crushed. Fermentation was initiated on the skins in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and maceration lasted 15-20 days. The wine was racked into stainless steel tanks for malolactic fermentation before aging for 16 months in large Slavonian oak vats followed by a minimum of 3 months in bottle before release.

Vintage:
The year began with a winter characterised by spells of rainfall that were abundant and consistent enough to replenish and guarantee excellent water reserves in the soil. Spring 2013 was characterised by quite peculiar conditions: temperatures were around the average and there was abundant rainfall, but there were reasonably long dry periods between the spells of heavy rain. The heat that truly arrived around mid-July sped up grape ripening processes, which continued with regularity through a summer with temperatures typical for the season and a perfect September that accentuated the differences between day and night temperatures experienced during the summer and permitted very balanced grape ripening. The 2013 vintage wines are elegant and fragrant, with good acidity and reasonable alcohol levels: there is a notable presence and persistence of the olfactory characteristics typical of the vine variety.

Tasting Notes:
Crisp, ripe, red berry and cherry aromas are shaped by vibrant, fresh acidity. In the mouth, flavors show classic Sangiovese notes of earth, mushrooms and leather, with a backbone of firm yet elegant tannins.
Food Pairing: Pairs well with meats and meat pasta sauces, poultry and hard cheeses.

Ratings & Reviews

94 Points - James Suckling:
"This ripe Chianti Classico shows aromas of strawberries, cherries and red plums. Hints of earth, too. Full body, juicy tannins and a medium-deep finish. Delicious now, but it will be better in 2020." (Sept 11, 2018)

93 Points - Wine Spectator:

"Black cherry, blackberry and dark plum fruit is allied to a muscular frame, with dense tannins. Tobacco, rosemary, thyme and tar notes play supporting roles as this builds to a long finish. Best from 2023 through 2038.—B.S"

89 Points - Wine Enthusiast Magazine (2014 vintage):
"This opens with aromas of black-skinned berry, scorched earth, and cooking spice. The lively palate doles out raspberry, black pepper and licorice alongside fine-grained tannins. Drink through 2023." - Kerin O’Keefe (3/1/2018)

Wine Spectator Magazine (2014 vintage):
"A fresh, cherry-, almond- and leather-flavored red, with firm tannins. Leaves a dusty sensation on the finish. A touch dry, but should improve with food. Drink now. 15,000 cases made." – BS (Web Only - 2017)
