About "The Poet" Andrea Franchetti

Andrea Franchetti has become an iconic Winemaker, making a "cult" wine in Tuscany: Tenuta di Trinoro, where he also produces a second label: Le Cupole.

He also owns an estate called Passopisciaro on the slopes of Mount Etna where he produces some very interesting red wines made of indigenous grapes, as well as some very good white wines.

Andrea only started his winemaking career at the beginning of the 90's. Before that he distributed wine in the USA and after he had enough, he purchased a little house in Tuscany and decided to make wine in a place where vineyards have practically never existed before.

He spent some time in Bordeaux, where he learnt to make wine, and he remains greatly influenced by Bordeaux wines.

He is an adept of quality and very low yields and usually prefers late harvests and small tanks.

91 Points -
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2006 vintage):
"There are 5,000 cases of the reasonably priced 2006 Cuvee Numero 2. A classic Bordeaux, it exhibits a deep ruby/purple hue along with sweet aromas of black currants infused with tobacco leaf, loamy, earthy undertones, spice box, and cedar. With sweet, noble tannin, medium to full body, and outstanding concentration, but less sucrosite than the Cuvee Numero 1 (the vintage’s raw materials do not provide the heft and weight of the 2005), it should drink well for 10-15 years.

The Winemaker’s Selection is a creative project with a different world class winemaker each year producing a wine from a specific parcel of vines at Chateau d’Arsac. The debut vintage in 2005, Cuvee Numero 1, was made by Michel Rolland, and this second offering was produced by the famed professor of oenology at Bordeaux University, Denis Dubourdieu. The third wine, the 2007, will be fashioned by Italy’s renowned Andrea Franchetti. This is intriguing in many ways. It is the same terroir, but each wine producer is given carte blanche authority to do whatever they wish. Obviously Dubourdieu’s 2006 raw materials were less impressive than Rolland’s in 2005, but Dubourdieu has acquitted himself very well." - Robert Parker (Feb 2009)

93 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2005 vintage):
"This is the first release of a special project of Jeremy Renard and the proprietor of Chateau d’Arsac in Margaux. Under Renard’s guidance, each year a single vineyard parcel from Chateau d’Arsac is completely controlled by a single, world-renowned winemaker. Michel Rolland launched the project, and he has been followed by other luminaries in the wine world. Rolland had the good fortune to benefit from an excellent vintage, and the result is a 5,000-case lot of sensational wine. The 2005 possesses a forward, voluptuous style, so it will have early appeal, but don’t discount its potential to last 15-20 years. It offers a dense ruby/purple hue along with a smoky perfume of sweet cherries, blackberries, roasted coffee, and a hint of tobacco leaf. There is a seamless integration of acidity, tannin, and wood in this complete, full-bodied wine. The finish lasts for 35-40 seconds. This beauty can be drunk now or cellared for 15-20 years." - April 2008
