Notes From The Winemaker:

Starting with the 2012 vintage, Christian Moueix introduced a new wine, Ulysses Estate. Ulysses comes from vines planted in Oakville, not too far from Dominus. The vineyards for Ulysses are located just north of the famous Napanook vineyards used by Dominus. The 31.5 acres of vines are planted in the Autres Rivages, which is next to the well-known vineyards of Missouri Hopper Ranch and Vine Hill Ranch on one side and To Kalon on the other side. Because the vineyards were planted with a high vine density, they used double Guyot trellising helpful with the narrow rows of vines. The soils are deep gravel with a terroir that is naturally cooler than that of Dominus. The vineyard is 100% dry farmed. The vineyard that is now used to produce Ulysses Estate wine was previously known as Schmidt Ranch. Schmidt Ranch sold their grapes to Swanson. The land was purchased by Christian Moueix in 2008. The vineyard is currently planted to 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot. The same technical team that produces Dominus, headed by Tod Mostero and Christian Moueix, will also be in charge of the vineyards and wine making for Ulysses Estate The wine is aged in an average of 45% new, French oak barrels for about 20 months before bottling.

Ratings & Reviews

95+ Points - Antonio Galloni:
"Gravel, smoke, graphite, savory herbs, tobacco and iron are some of the signatures in the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon. A typical wine from the eastern sector of Oakville on the border with Yountville, the 2013 is loaded with feral, savory notes, while the expression of blue/blackish fruit lies a bit more in the background. In 2013, the main signature is an expression of structure that is both vertical but also incredibly insistent through to the finish. In other words, this is a super-classic 2013 built for the cellar."
