Notes from the Winemaker:

Designation: estate-Bottled, Single-Vineyard Barolo DOCG

Region: Barolo, Piedmont

Grapes: 100% Nebbiolo, 100% Lampia clone

Winemaking: the grapes are selected from the single vineyard Lazzarito in Serralunga, which has 4,500 plants by hectare that are 39 years old and low yields of 20 hl/ha (1.1 ton/acre). The grapes are harvested and gently pressed, their juice ferments for 21 days in stainless steel tanks at 28-34° C (82-93 F). Lazzarito vineyard is one of the most famous “crus” of Serralunga. It’s our most modern interpretation of Barolo.

Aging: the wine is aged for 8 months in French oak barrels and 24 in Slovenian oak casks. Bottled unfiltered on the 17th of July 2012.

Description: deep garnet red in color. Richly rounded with a robust and velvety texture; intensely aromatic with hints of figs and plums. Elegant with soft and sweet tannins, followed by a long finish.

Food Pairings: game, red meats, aged cheeses

Alcohol: 14.51% Alc. by vol.

Ratings & Reviews

95+ Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"Luca recently purchased more land in the Lazzarito cru. The 2009 Barolo Lazzarito delivers subdued notes of red rose and violet that build in intensity as the wine takes on more air in the glass. Black fruit, plum, cassis, leather, tar and licorice soon follow suit. This wine is an absolute, drop-dead stunner. Its tannic crispness makes it feel lively and buoyant in the mouth. The wine shows heft and importance that become firmly etched in the mouth. Each time I went back to the glass, the wine told a new story. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2035." -Monica Larner" (June 2013)

93+ Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2008 vintage):
"The 2008 Barolo Lazzarito comes across as remarkably primary. Dark red fruit, iron, tar, smoke, wild flowers and minerals are all wrapped aroud a serious intense, mid-palate and finish. Today the 2008 comes across as a bit tightly wound, but that is the personality of the year. The balance of fruit, structure and oak is superb. Layers of fruit flow through to the firm, authoritative finish. This is impressive juice. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2028." - Antonio Galloni (April 2012)

92+ Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (2008 vintage):
"Amber-edged medium red. Strawberry, orange peel, cocoa powder and graphite on the nose. Sweeter and more seamless than the Rocche, showing strong acidity but a better early balance. Finishes long, brisk and perfumed, with a strong acid impression accentuated by a mineral firmness. " - Stephen Tanzer (Oct/Nov 2011)

92 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine (2008 vintage):
"There's an underpinning of iron in this cherry- and tar-infused red. Open in texture, with a solid structure relying on the one-two punch of acidity and tannins. The tea and balsamic notes linger. Best from 2016 through 2032. 400 cases made." - BS (Mar 31, 2013)
