Notes from the Winemaker:

Vineyards
The Cabernet Franc is grown on the Wolf Family estate located just south west of St. Helena against the foothills of the Mayacamas Range in Napa Valley.  Nearly one acre, the rolling vineyard was planted in the early 1980's on sparse, rocky, volcanic soils, situated on the slope toward the back of the property.  The vines produce very small, intensely flavored berries with low yields.

Vintage
The 2007 vintage began very early when the rains stopped in early March, reminding us of 2004. The vines enjoyed a warm, but not hot growing season and ripened on the early side on October 11 for the Cabernet Franc and October 2 for the Cabernet Sauvignon.  The yield from this vineyard is low and this year even more so at slightly less than 2 tons per acre.

Winemaking
The Cabernet Franc was inoculated with yeast after a 6 day cold soak on the skins. Both the Cabernet Franc and the Cabernet Sauvignon was pressed when dry, then aged 16 months in 50% new French oak barrels and 50% one and two year old French oak barrels. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Tasting Notes
Warm years of light rainfall tend to produce excellent vintages of elevated concentration, extract and fruit. The 2007 Wolf Family Vineyards Cabernet Franc is all of this and more.  The aromas are classic Cab Franc of herbal, blackberry and licorice.  The palate has the distinct oily mid texture characteristic of great Cab Franc.  It is able to portray both softness from the mid palate and firm tannins on the finish to produce a wine full profile.

Ratings & Reviews

91 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The limited production 2007 Cabernet Franc (100+ cases) offers sweet blueberry and raspberry fruit intertwined with hints of graphite and licorice. Enjoy this medium-bodied, elegant red over the next 7-10 years." - Robert Parker (12/2010)

91 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2006 vintage):
"Quite seductive, the dark ruby/purple-tinged 2006 Cabernet Franc has a hint of bay leaf intermixed with blueberry and raspberry notes, superb fruit, medium to full body, a delicate lightness to its style, yet intense flavor penetration on the palate. Its a beauty whose velvety tannins suggest drinking it over the next decade." - Robert Parker (12/2009)

91 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (2006 vintage):
"Bright red-ruby. Crushed berries, musky espresso and tobacco aromas lifted by a floral nuance. Subtle, juicy and pure, with a light touch to the currant, chocolate and spice flavors. Not a fleshy wine but offers very good intensity and life. Finishes with dusty, fine-grained tannins." - Stephen Tanzer (May/Jun 09)

94 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2005 vintage):
"The ethereal 2005 Cabernet Franc (about 200 cases produced) displays hints of roasted herbs, truffles, cranberries, black cherries, and even blacker fruits. Its mid-weight, elegance, and purity are sublime, but the wine packs plenty of intensity, behaving like a big red, without being heavy or ponderous. Drink this 2005 over the next 7-8 years. Karen Culler produces these limited production cuvees that are well-worth a search of the marketplace." - Robert Parker (12/2008)
