About This Wine:

The grapes for this Amarone come exclusively from older vineyards and from clusters that have been rigorously-selected; thus, production is extremely limited. It is produced in very few growing years, since the grapes used must be of far higher quality than those for the standard-vintage Amarone. It is vinified precisely according to classic practices. Gaspari has bottled the soul, the very quintessence of Amarone. It is an incredible blend of experience and expertise and of complex flavors as well. The result is a wine that can be defined as a masterpiece. It displays spicy notes of cinnamon, tobacco leaf, whisky and cherry preserves, lifted by subtle impressions of forest underbrush and moss. The luminous appearance is perfectly calibrated. Here is a wine possessing the authentic spirit of the past and a lengthy life still to come.

GRAPE: 40% Corvina, 30% Corvinone, 15% Rondinella, 5% Croatina and 10% Oseleta

REGION: Veneto

Tasting Notes:
In the mouth, it is complex, full-volume and generous, compelling and seductive, and leaves long-lingering impressions of fragrant blossoms, fruit and spice, creating "an utterly perfect sweetness that gives that unique sensation of harmony; it is without a doubt a rare wine, and I am the first to be impressed by it.”

Ratings & Reviews

95 Points - Antonio Galloni's Vinous Media:
"The 2001 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva della Mattonara bursts from the glass with endless layers of silky fruit. White flowers, French oak, new leather and spices blossom as the wine opens up. A super-refined, insistent finish leaves a strong impression. The Riserva della Mattonara is 40% Corvina, 30% Corvinone, 15% Rondinella, 10% Oseleta and 5% Croatina. The wine was fermented in cement vats and spent a whopping nine years in a combination of casks and smaller barrels. Today the French oak is a bit dominant. As good as the 2001 Riserva is, it can't quite match the 2006 Harlequin, the wine that remains the pinnacle of achievement at Zyme." - Antonio Galloni (February 2011)

94 Points & "Cellar Selection" - Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"This has all of the makings of a cult classic to come. It has pedigree—one of the founding winery partners is linked to the Quintarelli legacy—quality, elegance and a long aging future ahead. Dark, dense and thickly extracted, this is redolent of sweet tobacco, savory spice, cola, teriyaki sauce, black fruit and currant. The finish is long and streamlined, showing a touch of heat and muscle." (11/1/2011)

94 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
