Castelgiocondo Brunello di Montalcino Riserva D.O.C.G. 2003 (Tuscany, Italy)
Castelgiocondo Brunello di Montalcino Riserva D.O.C.G. 2003 (Tuscany, Italy)
Retail Price: $120.00

Notes from the Winemaker:

This wine displays an intense ruby red with garnet highlights, bright with a lovely consistency. It develops a remarkably complex bouquet, ranging from initial scents of red and black wild berry fruits such as plum, blackberry, blackcurrant and cherry, then to wild strawberries and vanilla. At the finish notes of roasted espresso bean, cocoa and tobacco leaf emerge with fresh mineral hints in the background. It displays notable smoothness and alcoholic warmth on the palate balanced with alively acidity and fine-grained tannins. In concludes with an almost endless finish subtly laced with well ripened fruit.

96+ Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"Le Potazzine always delivers a smooth and silky style with extreme elegance and the lifted cool-climate fruit that you get from this high-altitude growing site. The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is taut and firm with cherry fruit, dried raspberry, tilled earth, spice and blue flower. The wine sees an extended fermentation of 40 days and ages in botte grande for 42 months. This is a well-balanced wine that is slightly thinner, with one notch lower intensity in this vintage compared to past editions. You get a light, sharp and streamlined style. I prefer the 2015 vintage slightly to this wine, but I'm suggesting a longer drinking window here. This is an 18,000-bottle release that hits the market in January 2021." - Monica Larner (Nov 30 2020)

Ratings & Reviews
91 Points - Vinous Media:
"In the 2017 Rosso di Montalcino I find a remarkably pretty, yet also highly expressive display of peppery florals and spice, with mineral-laced black cherry, mint, cedar dust and leather. On the palate, silky textures are contrasted by tart berry and cherry, yet it remains fleshy, lively and fun, as zesty spices and minerals saturate the senses. The finish is long, as its fruits are leaning more toward cranberry now, motivated by mouthwatering acids and lingering savory spice. The 2017 La Serena Rosso di Montalcino is very easy to like, with depths seldom seen in a Rosso." - Eric Guido (Feb 2020)

93 Points - Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"This is full of licorice, tar and leather aromas and flavors, along with accents of chocolate and spice. Solidly built, with a dense matrix of tannins and lively acidity. The flavors return on the lingering aftertaste. Best from 2023 through 2037. 2,200 cases made." - BS (Jun 30, 2018)

93 Points - James Suckling:
Intense aromas of kirsch liqueur and dried red berries with a meaty edge, leading to a palate with succulent and compressed tannins, carrying long, fresh plum and cherry flavors. Drink or hold."
