Notes from the Winemaker:

Vineyard
High on the eastern slopes of the Napa Valley just south of the town of St. Helena is a saddle covered with loose rocky soil that extends down the benchland. On this precipitous ledge the 12 acre Rockledge estate vineyard is perched. The first vines were planted in 1993. To best suit the different soils and exposures on this rugged land within the St. Helena American Viticultural Area, four different combinations of rootstock and Cabernet Sauvignon clones are utilized. We have reserved fruit from only our favorite blocks for The Rocks.

Vintage - 2006 marked our 12th harvest. The season began with a cool, wet spring delaying bud break into early April. After the late start, the season progressed in a fairly normal progression with heat spikes in July and in early September. After the heat spikes the weather cooled allowing for extended hang time, with our late October harvest dates being about two weeks later than any prior year. Combined with our small berry, low production farming (yields about 2.3 tons/acre) the year produced the most concentrated Rockledge cabernet sauvignons yet.

Winemaking - Following destemming and hand sorting, the juice must was cold soaked for five days before fermentation. The must was left on the skins for 45 days before being pressed into new French oak barrels from winemaker Mike Hirby's favorite barrel makers, Darnajou, Tarransaud, and Gamba. Secondary malolactic fermentation occurred in the barrel. Racking was kept to a minimum and the wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered after 20 months.


What Does It Taste Like?

"Shortly after this wine was bottled in 2008, through experimentation we discovered the wine reached its peak in flavor after leaving the bottle open for 3 days. Although we are now down to a more normal one day of recommended breathing, this is still an amazingly concentrated cabernet and will age well for another 10-20 years. The flavors are typical Rockledge with its edge of spice somewhere between sage and clove providing a light compliment to the dark fruits of blackberries, plum sauce, and raspberries. At this stage in its development, upon opening the tannins are strong and you may be surprised by the dramatic evolution with air time--the day's wait will be worth it." -Winemaker, Mike Hirby
